Here is another pic of Gibber and Ish. I bought them a new cage two weeks ago because they had outgrown the temporary one I had them in just after I bought them. It was brand new with fairly tight fitting doors. I left them just before 10pm this evening and came back at just before 11pm to find the pair of them out and exploring on the roof of the cage.
Rats being intelligent come as nothing new to me as I have kept them before. However I am finding that females are more (now how shall I say this) ingenious....
Does anyone have a solution? The other thing I need help on is how do I get them to file their claws - ouch!

I had rats as pets long, long ago and I remember them being quite the Houdini's. We had a Habitrail set up and had to put something heavy on the top exits to keep them from escaping. I can't remember what our solution was for the front door of the cage but I think it involved a paperclip, lol.

Just take them with you - years ago I had a friend, who had a rat, that travelled everywhere with him. Great conversation starter on the tube, when the rat poked his head out of a pocket! They are such clever, fun pets.
our hamster has taken to swing across the bars on the roof of his cage, rather like monkey bars, which would be fine it he didn't do it at 2am ...! the girls have put books over it, as we think he's probably trying to do his version of the Great Escape (minus the motorbike), so the books make it a little less noisy. Regaridng the claws, couldn't you make them a little scratching post out of emery board (if such a thing isn't already available) or similar - maybe give them a pumice stone to play with
